There are a range of potential placements available for Journalism & Public Relations interns in Cape Town. For interns at an introductory level (who do not currently have background studies or experiences related to journalism) or interns choosing a short-term experience, placements may be assigned to NGOs. As opposed to NGO organizations, which can provide internship experience related to various writing and publication tasks, Media houses can accommodate longer–term journalism students for internships (internships lasting longer than 4 weeks).

Examples of internship placements and tasks can include:

  • Media House Internship: Responsibilities include writing articles, press releases, and assisting with media campaigns.tune to
  • Marketing and Public Relations Agency: Exposure to PR strategies, media relations, and client management.
  • Corporate Communications Department: Working with a company’s internal communications team to create content, newsletters, and manage employee communications.
  • Social Media Management: Focusing on social media strategy, content creation, and analytics for brands or organizations.
  • Event Planning and Coordination: Involvement in organizing and promoting events, managing media relations, and handling PR aspects.
  • Non-profit Organization Communications: Involvement in PR and communications efforts for a non-profit organization, including fundraising campaigns and community outreach.
  • Event, Fashion or Lifestyle Magazine: Contributing to a magazine’s editorial team, covering topics related to fashion, lifestyle, or entertainment.

In all cases, understand and expect that individual internship experiences vary, as the specific placement that you’re assigned will depend on review of your resume and your current level of studies and experience. Therefore, if you’re at a more introductory level, you should reasonably expect a more introductory internship. Likewise, if you’re interning for a shorter duration, you will have a different experience from someone who is interning for a longer duration. Placement preferences are considered but always subject to availability.

Interns should expect that the first week of your experience will focus on settling in and gaining some introductory knowledge, as you will not “hit the ground running”. Rather, you should start with learning about the placement to gain an understanding of what you can build upon, develop, learn, and contribute. Ensure that you ask questions and provide feedback during the introductory period, so that your supervisor understands how you’re progressing. This will help them to better understand important details, such as how quickly you learn, what you find challenging, what you find interesting, etc.
