GROUP MANAGER: RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND INNOVATION (RD&I)

About the job:

The CSIR has a vacancy for Group Manager: Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) in the Business Excellence and Integration portfolio.The role is accountable for institutional policy and processes around RDIand is responsible for a diverse portfolio of functions including RDI management; RDI programmes; Compliance; Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer as well as Strategic RDI Partnerships. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key responsibilities:

  • RDI Management: Development of world-class RDI management capacity and practice across the organisation to improve investment outcomes and decision making through development of policies, processes, capacity and systems.
  • Parliamentary Grant Management: Co-ordination of the annual approval and investment of the organisation’s Parliamentary Grant allocation; Monitoring and evaluation of investments in capabilities, technologies, research centres, infrastructure and other initiatives; Identification and exploration of future areas of RDI investment.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Managing the organisation’s strategic partnerships function to develop and maintain partnerships to establish new opportunities for RDI collaborations in the public, private and international sectors as well as partnerships with Higher Education Institutions.
  • Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer: Support the management, continuity and enhancement of IP and Tech Transfer office strategy and operations
  • Research Governance and Quality: Support the management and continuity of Research Ethics operations as well as initiatives on RDI quality and governance. Evaluation and continuous improvement of CSIR RDI programs.
  • Organisational Initiatives: Support the development and implementation of strategic initiatives including but not limited to technology localisation, state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary technology and product development, business development and commercialisation and others.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A master’s degree in engineering, life sciences, environmental/physical science or related fields with at least ten years’ broad professional experience in research or knowledge based organisation, which includes a minimum of:
    • Seven years RDI experience including experience of taking a high-tech product from idea to market;
    • Developing RDI strategy for an organisation including portfolio optimisation, product/service platform development, RDI platform development, development of core competencies and dynamic capabilities, etc.
    • Seven years’ experience in the conceptualisation and execution of industry relevant RDI programmes.  
    • Experience in the commercialisation of technologies;
    • A minimum of five years’ experience in managing local and international business stakeholder relationships including securing contract R&D opportunities;
    • Experience in managing team finances, human resources, operations, strategy, marketing and business development
